Be Kind to Animals Week in Brooksville, Fl.

The American Humane Association created Be Kind to Animals Week in 1915 to encourage compassion toward animals. Every year, animal shelters throughout the country hold special events during this time to raise awareness about animals in the community and to celebrate the bond between humans and animals.

This year the Humane Society will be offering a special adoption gift package with every shelter adoption from May 4 to May 10, 2008, according to Executive Director, Joanne Schoch at the Humane Society located at Wiscon and Mobley Roads.

The House Ignores Veto Threats on Homeowner Rescue Plan

On Thursday, May 8, 2008, the House passed a homeowner rescue plan that will provide cheaper, government-backed mortgages to half a million borrowers and has plans to bolster an economy crippled by the housing crisis.

Ignoring the veto threats from President Bush, the House approved the measure by a vote of 266-154, with 39 Republicans supporting it.

It would let the Federal Housing Administration take on up to $300 billion in new mortgages so that financially borrowers facing foreclosure could refinance.

Northern Florida Feels the Impact of the Housing Crisis

In March of 2006 the home sales in Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater were taking a plunge of 26 percent. During that time, Ocala, Tallahassee, Gainesville and Jacksonville were still on an upward rise of home sales.

However, those cities couldn’t keep themselves from the drop of the housing market forever. They’re now feeling the impact of the Housing Crisis.

March home sales in Ocala were down 50 percent. Gainesville suffered a 34-percent drop. Jacksonville’s decline was 37 percent and Tallahassee’s 29 percent.

Housing Prices Continue to Decline

Housing prices dropped in February 2008 at the fastest rate ever recorded, a widely watched index showed on Tuesday, April 29, 2008. The index showed that the housing slump is gaining momentum and showing no signs of letting up.

The Standard & Poor’s/Case-Shiller home price index of 20 cities fell by 12.7 percent in February 2008 as opposed to last year, this is the largest decline since its inception in 2001. Seventeen of the 20 metro areas reported record annual declines.

Housing Crisis still on an Upward Climb

Monday, April 28, 2008 a research study showed that U.S. homes heading for foreclosure more than doubled in the first quarter of 2008 from a year earlier, as weakening property values and tighter lending has left many homeowners powerless to preventing their homes from being auctioned to the highest bidder.

Among some of the hardest hit states were Nevada, Florida and, in particular, California, where Stockton led the nation with a foreclosure rate that was 6.6 times the national average, Irvine, Calif.-based RealtyTrac Inc. said.

House Swapping, A Real Estate Twist

Mary Babinetz has run ads in the newspaper and held six open houses before she listed her South Tampa condo in the home-swapping section of Craigslist. She’s looking for a three-bedroom, two-bath house priced at around $250,000 in New Tampa or Temple Terrace area and she would take $180,000 for her 982-square-foot condo.

Many homeowners have used the free Web site, Craigslist, in search of house swapping partners in all price ranges.
